🏗️🧱 A Unique Project: Moving the Shell Prelude Model
Recently, Mechanical Miniatures had the pleasure of working with Shell Energy at Shell House, undertaking the relocation and restoration of an incredible LEGO® model — the Shell Prelude FLNG facility.
Originally built in 2014 by Ryan McNaught, this model is a true showcase of large-scale LEGO engineering, packed with intricate detail and clever design throughout.
With recent renovations at Shell House, the model had been temporarily stored on Level 11. The task was to carefully disassemble, transport, reassemble, repair, and clean the model, ready for its new permanent display at reception on Level 1.
🔧 Disassembly, Transport & Rebuild
This was no ordinary move.
The model was cleverly engineered with an interlocking base system and hidden LEGO “keys” used to lock the hull sections together. Many of these were extremely tight and required careful removal to avoid damage.
During reassembly, several of these locking elements needed to be recreated and refitted, ensuring the structure remained solid and true to its original design.
Every stage of the process — from breakdown to rebuild — required patience, precision, and a deep understanding of how complex LEGO models behave at scale.
🛠️ Repairs & Restoration
With the model disassembled, it was the perfect opportunity to carry out some much-needed repairs and maintenance.
Key restoration work included:
🔧 Repairing damaged and broken piping sections🔥 Refreshing the flame stack, which had begun to show signs of age🧼 Carrying out a detailed clean to remove dust and restore presentation
After years on display and time in storage, the model has now been
brought back to life — looking clean, sharp, and ready to be appreciated once again.
🏁 Back on Display
Now proudly positioned in its new home at reception, the Prelude model is once again front and centre — where it belongs.
It’s a piece that rewards close inspection, with layers of detail, structure, and storytelling built into every section.
If you ever find yourself visiting Shell House, it’s well worth taking the time to stop and take it in.
🤝 Working with Shell Energy
Mechanical Miniatures was proud to carry out this work for Shell Energy and be trusted with such a unique and detailed model.
Projects like this highlight the crossover between real-world engineering and LEGO® craftsmanship, something that sits right at the core of what Mech Minis is about.
We look forward to the potential for future work and continued collaboration.
💬 Final Thoughts
From careful disassembly to final polish, this project was a reminder that LEGO® models , especially at this scale, deserve the same level of care and respect as the real-world structures they represent.
🧱 Build it. Understand it. Display it.🏗️ From miniature models to real-world projects.
